The Organ Donor Leave Act (Public Law 106-56)

This law provides Federal employees with paid leave, not exceeding 30 days in any calendar year, to serve as an organ donor. It also allows federal employees to take paid leave, not exceeding seven days in any calendar year, to serve as a bone marrow donor.

S. 1334, was introduced by Sen. Akaka on July 1, 1999, and referred to the Governmental Affairs Committee. On July 5, S. 1334 was referred to the Subcommittee on International Security, Proliferation and Federal Services. The Subcommittee favorably reported S. 1334 by polling letter to the full Committee on July 23, 1999. The full Committee on Governmental Affairs considered S. 1334 and its House companion bill, H.R. 457, on August 3, 1999 and ordered both bills be favorably reported by voice vote. A written report on H.R. 457 was filed on August 27, 1999 (S. Rept. 106-143).

On September 8, 1999, H.R. 457 passed the Senate by Unanimous Consent. It was signed into law on September 24, 1999 as P.L. 105-56.
