The "Brick Capitol," photographed by Mather Brady, ca. 1865

Congress met in this building from 1814-1819 while the U.S. Capitol, just across the street, was being repaired after being burned by British troops during the War of 1812. Later it became a boarding house, and during the Civil War it was used as a prison. It was demolished in 1867.
