Art & History News: Black History Month

In 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson designated the third week of February as Negro History Week.  Woodson chose February to honor the birthdays of two important figures in the history of black America -- Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.  In 1976, his efforts were further rewarded when February was designated as Black History Month.  More Information from the Congressional Research Service.
