Bulletproof Vests

Sadly, even in our smaller towns and cities, police officers are in danger of falling victim to gun violence. I have seen firsthand the protection bulletproof vests offer our men and women in law enforcement and I believe that they deserve the best protection available.

The "Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant Act," enacted into law in 1998, provides $25 million per year for three years for bulletproof vests and guarantees that at least half of the investment goes to communities with fewer than 100,000 residents. As a cosponsor of the bill, I succeeded in designating the City of Sheboygan as one of only 33 communities selected nationwide for a pilot program which will bring additional funding for new bulletproof vests. The Department of Justice's new online Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program allows agencies to study different kinds of vests, contact sellers and apply for federal funding electronically, without time consuming paperwork.

In addition to Sheboygan, dozens of communities across the state have received funding under this program.
