Herb is presented with the National Guard's Charles Dick Medal of Merit by Albert H. Wilkening, Major General of the Wisconsin Air National Guard. The national award recognizes the contributions by elected officials on behalf of the Guard.




Herb speaks with Naval and Marine Reservists at Green Bay's Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center, as Commander Benson looks on. Herb also met with the active duty staff and received a briefing on the center's operations. At the time of his visit, 30 Naval Reservists and 91 Marine Reservists from the center had been called to active duty to support the war on terror.




Herb meets with participants at the Senior Expo 2002 in Ashland. Herb discussed prescription and generic drug legislation recently debated in the Senate, as well as other issues, at the Expo.

Herb spends time with kids at an Appleton day care center. The children participate in the USDA's Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), which plays a vital role in improving the quality of day care and children's nutrition. Kohl is the chairman of the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee and worked to fund CACFP.




Herb honors Wisconsin Veterans of World War II who participated in the Normandy landing and liberation of France between June 6, 1944 and May 8, 1945. These 350 WWII Veterans were recognized at an event in Eau Claire.




Herb chats with kids at the Wausau Boys & Girls Club, which he announced will receive a federal grant. A longtime supporter of Boys & Girls Clubs, Herb has helped to provide nearly $1 million in federal funding in the past year to clubs in Wisconsin.




Herb visits the James William Junior High School in Rhinelander to preview the Oneida County Sheriff's School Safety Officer program. The program was created using funds provided by the federal Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program, which Herb helped to initiate as part of the 1994 Crime Bill.




Herb meets with members of the Antigo Fire Department during his visit to congratulate the Department on its 100th anniversary.




Herb joins local leaders in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Fondy Farmers Market in Milwaukee. A big supporter of farmers market nutrition programs, Herb helped to secure language in the FY02 Supplemental Appropriations bill that directed Senior Farmers' Market funding to Wisconsin.




Herb chats with second grade students at Madison's Emerson Elementary School. Joined by State School Superintendent Libby Burmaster, Herb used the visit to highlight Wisconsin's school breakfast program for which he helped secure $500,000 in federal funding.




Herb presents the Purple Heart Award to George Vergetis, a West Allis World War II Army veteran and former Prisoner of War. Mr. Vergetis received a collection of medals earned during his service after Herb contacted the National Personnel Record Center on his behalf.




Herb raises a glass of milk to the new dairy compromise contained in the Farm Bill. The new dairy program ends the regional inequities that pitted the Upper Midwest against New England. Herb was presented with an honorary alumni award at St. Norbert College just before this visit to the College's Center for Adaptive Education and Assistance Technology.



During a visit to Green Bay's Bay Towel factory, Herb highlights the $1.2 million in federal funding he secured for the Bay Area Workforce Development Board. He secured the funding, used to train workers for specific employer needs in the region, as part of the FY 02 budget process.



Herb visits the DaimlerChrysler Engine Plant in Kenosha.



Herb meets with members of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau who are in Washington for the Young Farmer Program.



Wisconsin representatives from the International Association of Fire Fighters meet with Herb in his office and present him with a fire fighter's hat.



Bucky, the University of Wisconsin Spirit Squad and UW Marching Band came to visit Herb in Washington, DC, prior to the Wisconsin Men's Basketball Team's first game in the 2002 NCAA tournament there.



The University of Wisconsin Marching Band played "On Wisconsin," "The Bud Song" and "Varsity" for Herb while they were visiting his office.



Herb attends an event sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs and the French Consulate General to honor Wisconsin Veterans of World War II who participated in the Normandy landing and liberation of France. During a visit to Green Bay's King Elementary School, fifth grade students work on a simulated space launch program sponsored by the Wisconsin Initiative on Math, Science and Technology Education. Herb secured $3.5 million over the last two years for the WIMSTE program to help improve math, science and technology skills for students statewide.



Herb receives the 2002 Friend of Public Power Award from Menasha Mayor Joe Laux.



Herb and Appleton Mayor Tim Hanna visit a locally owned and operated bookstore during their tour of College Avenue. Senator Kohl secured $300,000 for the redevelopment of College Avenue as part of the bill that funds the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in FY 2002.



Herb visits the R-Way Furniture redevelopment area in Sheboygan's central city. Senator Kohl secured $300,000 in federal funding to assist in redevelopment efforts for the property and create jobs in Sheboygan.



In August 2001, Herb visited the Rice Lake Municipal Airport, for which he secured $500,000 in federal funding to help repair the runway there.



Herb visits the Douglas County Senior Center in Superior. The center provides technology training to senior citizens to help them become familiar with computers and other equipment used in today's workplaces. Senator Kohl has requested funding for the senior center.



Herb visits with children at Madison's Woods Hollow Children's Center, a facility backed in part by Promega for use by its employees. Senator Kohl's legislation to create a tax credit for employers that provide on- or near-site child care centers for their employees was signed into law in June 2001 by President Bush.



The President of the Wisconsin Federation of Cooperatives, Rod Nilsestuen, presents the National Cooperative Business Association's Honored Cooperator Award to Herb for his ongoing commitment to all types of cooperative enterprise.
