  • Object Description
  • This porcelain smoking set was accepted by a senator on behalf of the United States in 1979 as a gift from a government official of Hungary (then the Hungarian People’s Republic). The 11-piece set includes a cigarette box with lid, a cigarette holder, 2 matchstick holders, 3 ashtrays, 3 cigarette tampers, and a tray. It is hand-painted with purple floral decorations in Herend's "Apponyi" pattern. As with all foreign gifts, its acceptance and use are governed by the Foreign Gifts and Decorations Act (5 U.S.C. § 7342).
