Chair, Turkish-style Arm

A Senate voucher dated June 30, 1875, records a payment of $783.61 to John T. Mitchell, a dry goods retailer in Washington, D.C., for a “set [of] leather-covered Turkish furniture for [the] President’s room.” Characterized by an overstuffed appearance with upholstery that hides its wooden base and frame, “Turkish”-style furniture became a fashionable choice for comfortable seating in the United States during the late 19th century. Photographs and published inventories confirm that the set of seven pieces, which includes two sofas, three armchairs, and two side chairs, has remained in continuous use in the President’s Room since it was purchased in 1875.
