This salon styling chair was used in the Senate Hair Care, a barbershop and beauty salon located in the basement of the Russell Senate Office Building. A manufacturer’s label on the underside of the seat indicates that the chair was manufactured by the Belvedere Company of Illinois. Belvedere Company has been a leading manufacturer of hydraulic salon chairs in the United States, producing its first line of hydraulic chairs for salons in 1957. This chair features a hydraulic chrome base and, according to the label, has vinyl upholstery with the color name "peach."
The Senate has provided hair care services since the 19th century. The first Senate barbershop was located in the Capitol and was for the use of senators only. In 1930, the Senate added an employee barbershop and a beauty salon in the basement of the Senate Office Building (now the Russell Senate Office Building).
