  • Object Description
  • This replica gavel, made of wood capped with metal discs at both ends, is modeled after the historic ivory gavel that was used by the presiding officers of the Senate throughout the 19th century until its retirement from regular use in 1954. The replica gavel was created for display in the restored Old Senate Chamber in anticipation of the room's dedication ceremony on June 16, 1976. For many years, this gavel, together with a wood gavel block, remained on display on the vice president's desk in the Old Senate Chamber. It was also used in a joint meeting of Congress convened in Philadelphia's Congress Hall on July 16, 1987, to commemorate the bicentennial of the United States Constitution.
