Jeri Thomson, Secretary of the Senate, 2001–2003


Jeri Thomson was elected and sworn in as the 30th secretary of the United States Senate on July 12, 2001.

Prior to her election to secretary of the Senate, Ms. Thomson served as the executive assistant democratic representative in the Office of the U.S. Senate Sergeant at Arms from 1995 to 2000. She also served as the assistant secretary of the Senate from 1989 to 1995. In addition, Ms. Thomson was a senior staff member to Senator John Tunney from 1971 to 1976. She then served as a special assistant to the sergeant at arms until 1982, and was the deputy director of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee until 1989.

Ms. Thomson grew up in the state of Washington. She attended the University of Washington and was a Kodak fellow at Harvard University's program for senior managers in government. In 1993 she was selected as one of the 100 top data processors in government, industry, and academia for her work in automating the legislative processes and procedures in the Senate.

Ms. Thomson is married to Dr. David James. They have two daughters.
