  • Object Description
  • Torches, such as this one made of brass by Thomas W. Houchin of New York, were used to light the many gaslights and chandeliers that illuminated the Capitol during the second half of the 19th century. Electric lights gradually began to replace gas fixtures in the Capitol beginning in 1885.
