Object Description
This hand-colored engraving was the cover of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper for April 1, 1871. It depicts Senate Charles Sumner of Massachusetts being removed as chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations in March of 1871. The incident occurred as a result of differences with President Ulysses S. Grant over the United States' relationship with Great Britain and the annexing of Santo Domingo. The scene takes place in the Senate Reception Room on the 2nd floor of the U.S. Capitol.
