Suffragist Alice Paul organized the large-scale national suffrage parade, which took place in Washington, D.C., on March 3, 1913, the day before President Woodrow Wilson’s inauguration. The event began peacefully as suffragists departed from the Peace Monument on the west side of the U.S. Capitol. As the procession advanced along Pennsylvania Avenue toward the White House, however, spectators lining the parade route surged, aggressively blocking the suffragists’ route.
