On September 30, 1918, President Wilson delivered a brief, impassioned speech in the Senate Chamber. Calling the woman suffrage amendment a vital wartime measure, Wilson pleaded with senators to deliver “justice to women.” The president sought to persuade senators who remained opposed to the amendment, particularly a coalition of southern Democrats and northeastern Republicans known as the “unholy alliance.”
