Each medal honors a particular individual, institution, or event. Initially bestowed on military leaders, recipients now include actors, authors, entertainers, musicians, pioneers in aeronautics and space, explorers, lifesavers, notables in science and medicine, athletes, humanitarians, public servants, and foreigners.
