About the Secretary of the Senate | Gary Sisco, 1996-2001

Tennessee native Gary Sisco spent much of his early career moving between Tennessee and Washington, D.C. After completing his education at the University of Mississippi and George Washington University, Sisco joined the staff of Senator Howard H. Baker, Jr., serving in both Memphis and Washington. In 1974 he managed Lamar Alexander’s campaign for governor, after which he moved back to Washington to become administrative assistant to Representative Robin Beard. In October 1996 Majority Leader Trent Lott chose Sisco to be secretary of the Senate. During his five-year tenure, Sisco continued the technological innovations of his predecessors, bringing a new Financial Management Information System to the Disbursing Office. In December 1998 Gary Sisco became the second secretary of the Senate to receive presidential impeachment articles from the House of Representatives. Working closely with Senate leadership, Sisco successfully managed the many administrative details of the historic 1999 impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton. Sisco also played a key role in authorizing, funding, planning, and developing the Capitol Visitor Center.
