  • Object Description
  • This document is an engrossed copy of S. Res. 446 (94th Congress, 2nd Session), which was introduced by Majority Leader Mike Mansfield and passed by the Senate on May 12, 1976. The resolution calls for the Senate to recess at 4 o'clock in the afternoon on June 16, 1976, and to reassemble in legislative session in the newly restored Old Senate Chamber for its dedication and reopening as a "historical shrine." By unanimous order, the resolution invites the vice president of the United States "to address the Senate assembled for this occasion." Secretary of the Senate Francis R. Valeo signed the document, which features a gold-embossed Senate seal and purple ribbon.

Prior to the room's reopening to the public on June 16, 1976, the historic chamber, which had served as the Senate Chamber from 1810 to 1859 and as the Supreme Court Chamber from 1860 to 1935, was mostly closed, though it was used occasionally for casual events such as conferences and dinners. By the early 1960s, members of the Senate began building support to have the room restored as a mid-19th-century legislative chamber and its historical significance interpreted for visitors. Congress appropriated money for the room's restoration in 1972, and now, more than 50 years later, it continues to be enjoyed daily by visitors as an important historical landmark in the Capitol.
