  • Object Description
  • This commemorative glass picture frame, together with a leather portfolio, was presented to attendees of the Inaugural Luncheon held in National Statuary Hall as part of the 57th Presidential Inaugural Ceremonies. The glass picture frame features a dark teal and gold pattern around the frame based on decorative motifs found around Statuary Hall and the U.S. Capitol. The Great Seal of the United States ornaments the upper center of the frame, and the text "57th Presidential Inauguration / United States Capitol" is printed at the bottom center. The back of the frame is covered in dark blue velvet. Luncheon attendees received the frame with a reproduction of a wood engraving of the east front of the Capitol titled Birdseye View of the City of Washington, with the Capitol in the Foreground, which was originally published in The Illustrated London News on May 26, 1861. Recipients were later mailed a copy of the official swearing-in photograph, which was intended to replace the view of the Capitol. The frame was custom designed and crafted by David Howell & Company of Bedford Hills, New York.
