  • Object Description
  • This official 2020 United States Congressional holiday ornament—together with a brass compass, leather pouch, and engraved wood gift box—was presented in lieu of traditional Inaugural Luncheon gifts as part of the 59th Presidential Inaugural Ceremonies. The Inaugural Luncheon was not held in 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Beacon Design by ChemArt of Lincoln, Rhode Island, created the cut-brass ornament, which depicts the west front of the U.S. Capitol festooned with flags and decorative bunting.

Its composition is inspired by the appearance of the Capitol during the 1989 inaugural ceremonies, which marked the bicentennial of the first swearing-in of George Washington. The two outermost flags pictured on the ornament show the American flag of 1789, with 13 stars arranged in a circle. Beside these are two flags with 38 stars each, representing the nation's flag in 1889. In the center of the group hangs the current 50-star flag of the United States.
